surprise!

We managed to surprise the socks off Gran Gran at her early 60th birthday party! Well, her socks didn't come off, but she dropped her purse and nearly fell over ;) Complete with a hippo cake and dinner prepared by my sister and brother-in-law (so good!)... Topped off with the hosts' my uncle's homemade irish cream and appetizers, etc from my aunt.

Aiden helped Gran Gran blow out her candles and was so patient waiting for cake while we played PopPop's birthday quiz for my mom.
Can't beat fun surprises!
Happy Birthday Mommu, Gran Gran!

more xmas fun

We have really packed in the fun in this first half of December.  We were able to squeeze in a visit to see Aiden's oldest best buddy Tyler and decorate Gingerbread cookies and exchange presents (new cars!).  These two get along so well.

We had a sixth visit with a Santa and this time Mrs. Claus was there too.  They met with each kid, gave them a present (a stuffed penguin friend) and read a Christmas story.  It's so fun this year that Aiden likes hanging out with Santa.  My favorite is how he puts his finger to his lips like he's "thinking" about what he would like.  IPhone shots:

concert photos

I realize there is something about these concerts that will eventually wear off when the kids aren't quite as cute or enthusiastic to see you there.  I realize that they are much more exciting to the actual parents who see their smiling cuties than anyone else.  But I didn't realize how ridiculously happy it would make  me to see my smiling boy sit up there today...ok, maybe I did realize pretty quickly after hearing about it ;) - but these photos and videos will be my go-to cheer up for a while.
Giggling at the funny face game he wanted to play with daddy:

This kid had a full night's rest, but here he is lounging during the big kids singing and yawning with a singing face:
 Scritch scratching his rumbling tummy:

Today was the Winter Program at Aiden's school.  I was really looking forward to it and really hoping that he wouldn't get sick or miss it somehow.  I got especially excited because Aiden told me he was doing a solo dressed as a christmas tree.  I was skeptical and asked him what and solo was, and he responded "oh mama, a solo is when you sing by yourself!" (as if I was so silly for not knowing)  Then I asked him what he was singing and he coyly said, "That's not for talking about at home."  So the teachers must have told them to keep quiet so it was a surprise ;)

Turns out that they had the class sing a "solo" of I'm a Little Snowflake with the bigger primary kids as back up singers.  There was no christmas tree costume to be found, so that must have been the result of an active imagination from a tricky kid. Aiden spent about 20% of the time actually singing, 20% of the time yawning with his lips pursed like he was singing, 25% staring off into space blankly, 5% actually laying his head down on the back of his chair, 10% pulling on his shirt rubbing his rumbly tummy (which was ready for you know what), and 10% making faces at his daddy, 5% bowing a tiny bit, and 5% waving and smiling at us.

Here is my "coverage" which I wasn't terribly happy with because I felt like I missed some really cute moments when my shot was taken over by hair, etc and when I was getting still photos instead.  Turns out that the front row seats are auctioned off at their Parent Fundraiser every year, and the second row was already full an hour before the show started! Crazy parents are crazier than me ;)

Here is the better coverage overall from the other camera J held while standing against the wall on the side, but it's a "grandparent cut" meaning it's loooong.  My favorite is at about 4:30 in when they sing, "Music Makes Me Sing":

We continued the musical day with a visit to a new music class that used the whole Nutcracker suite.  It was so much fun to see Aiden get so excited to march like a mouse, which he immediately said was his favorite part.  Here is a blurb from the invitation - "You're invited to sample a class at our celebrated "Nutcracker Ballet" open house. Experience music in a whole new way as we march with the mice, dance with the Sugar Plum Fairy, sing with Mother Ginger’s children, and travel through the Land of the Snow."

green's theorem

Last week was the annual Winter Party at what will soon be my "old" job - Tomorrow is my last day!!  Aiden, aka. Green's Theorem's biggest fan, was at what may be his last performance.  It's a bit sad that I think he's been to every one of their performances ;)  They are a group of engineers that play your classic rock type stuff that Aiden likes to bop to.  These photos were all taken by my replacement while I sat at a table actually enjoying some food - how novel!  I really enjoyed it ;) Aiden was playing shy to the camera just like a photographer's kid.

week two

In between all the big fun, we've had some everyday fun activities.  I managed to capture a few little snippets from the crafty stuff, so you can watch and feel like you're sitting there watching Aiden craft ;)
  • Day 8: Learn a new xmas song, We Wish You a Merry Christmas
  • Day 9: Make gifts for friends, a tree or mitten crayon
  • Day 10: Dance party with friends, Green's Theorem Band fans
  • Day 11: Shop for presents and discover a stocking Santa left behind early!
  • Day 12: Decorate the gingerbread house
  • Day 13: Make outdoor bird seed pine cone ornaments
  • Day 14: Have xmas tree sandwiches for lunch

party!

I think one of Aiden's favorite thing to do is go to birthday parties.  We never turn down an invitation ;)  This was a great one with all of J's fun family.  All the kids are cousins in some way with the birthday boy. It's fun to see a new generation all together.

Aiden always picks the "buurthday cake" as his favorite part of the party.  This kid sure does like frosting like his dad.  I think he loves helping blow out the candles, wearing the party hats and especially playing with all the "new" toys.

I can't wait to see more of the photos from the party because some of the kiddos took over the cameras and were shooting away ;)

discovery museum

We finished out our holiday shopping this weekend.  Thanks goodness for Amazon that saved us from too many crowded stores!  Then we were planning to cruise north of Boston for cousin Matthew's 2nd birthday party, and we made it a day trip.  We had a nice lunch at Not Your Average Joe's (tomato basil soup with ricotta mozzarella puffs and peanut butter haute cocoa - yum! - and their green beans are so good that Aiden ate them dipped in ketchup like french fries).  Then we stopped at the Discovery Museum in Acton.  I think J loved it just as much as Aiden:

library santa

Aiden dubbed this santa, the Library Santa.  We went to his favorite library right down the street from his school for their santa and cookies decorating event.  When we arrived and I couldn't find a place to park I knew I was in trouble.  It seemed that half of Rhode Island showed up for the event.  We were able to get into cookie decorating only after a few minutes.  Somehow I thought the santa line would die down, but it was only getting worse.  I tried to convince Aiden that we didn't need to see a fourth santa, so we could just go home.  But someone clued him in that Santa was giving away candy canes and this kid will do a lot for candy.  Then a nice librarian gave him one "to hold until after you talk to Santa" - I think she thought she was doing me a favor, but instead it meant that we just-haaaad-to wait in the over 45 minute line to see Santa to "earn" his candy cane.  J was at a workshop, so we couldn't split our parenting and have one parent wait in line while Aiden continued to play.  So we read Beatrix Potter books and the crazy santa would occasionally jump up and start singing, so we stayed entertained.  We went out to a pizzeria for dinner and thumb wrestled while we waited for pizza.  While we waited yet again, out of the blue Aiden pulled out his sweet I love you mommy, and it was all totally worth the wait.

week 1

We've been up to all sorts of festive fun lately.  Aiden gets excited to open a new door on his Gran advent calendar (that has candy inside! only a grandparent would buy that) and then asks, "What special thing do we get to do today?"  Here is week one of our December advent activities:
  • Day 1: Bake cookies and decorate them as Santa monsters
  • Day 2: Make a Christmas Village/Playground with macaroni noodle characters
  • Day 3: Donate to the school food drive
  • Day 4: Decorate the Christmas tree
  • Day 5: Help stamp and close the holiday cards
  • Day 6: Color the 2010 wooden toy soldier
  • Day 7: Make some new ornaments for the tree

half way!

I'm almost half way through this 40 weeks-ish of my second pregnancy!  Phew, I can't even tell you how fast it has seemed.  I think it's because I've been taking care of Aiden, working, and going to class that time just gets squished.  My final class projects were turned in last night and my last day of work is Dec 16th!  I have my next appointment on the 16th as well, and I'm wishing and hoping that this annoying previa has disappeared and that the placenta has moved on up the road.  I bet time may slow down after a while this spring.  Time would really, really slow down if this previa forces me into bed rest - but I refuse to even think about that.  Instead, I'm celebrating finishing my class with a pregnancy massage this morning!  The last class before graduation begins in February - woohoo!

I have an early onset of a pregnancy symptom I was fairly prone to last time - The never-ending desire to fuss with baby stuff.  I think that it set in earlier this time because I am home more often and possibly crazier than before ;)  I have to say it is my favorite "rest time" activity to fuss with something in the still nearly empty baby room.  The latest was getting out the box of clothes labeled "itty bitty baby," folding them, then realizing that they all need a good fresh wash, putting in a huge load of laundry, and then refolding all of them.  It's nesting nut central!

I also realized the Aiden was swimming in all his clothes for at least the first two months (and I have pictures to prove it).  I think we mainly just cuddled in the warm house during that time or he was wrapped in blankets in the baby carrier.  But since I have a feeling this next baby will be a bit more social given that Aiden will want to get out and about in the summer, I am on a mission to find some cute duds that will truly fit a 0-2 month old.  The other big issue we have is that everything we have is a bit "off-season" since Aiden was a winter baby and we're essentially expecting a summer baby.  Regardless, I feel so lucky that we saved everything and don't need to hemorrhage money on frilly girly stuff (or more like have other people gift us with tons of girly stuff - thanks anyway folks ;).

Everyone wants to know about names, but that decision may take a while this time around.  Aiden has occasionally started calling "his baby" a new name other than Scaryyyy.  I'm still not sure if we're settled on it. Although if I know Aiden, he might not let us change our mind.  But it has a nice ring to it and it's pretty darn cute when Aiden says the name.  And no, it does not rhyme with Scary, no offense to all the nice Harry, Barry, and Larry's I've known.

One thing that is scary is how consistent this baby is in his wakeup calls at night.  He will bounce all around right at 3:30am until I wake up. Aiden had a 1am habit, and that actually continued when he was an infant.  So I really, really hope that this baby gives me an extra two hours of sleep!

I worked at our annual gingerbread house competition at engineering last week (this time the houses were shake resistant instead of crush proof).  I was walking past one of our swanky garbage cans that has a mirrored circle top and my belly protruded in that mirror.  It made me shudder, then laugh out loud.  This belly and its protruding belly button is not easy to ignore, so it's amazing that it does startle me sometimes when I walk past a mirror.  My mind does not realize how big it is getting.  Although consciously I realize that the button on my layered jackets will only button for a short bit more.  I don't feel as big as I did last time, and I think it's because I know that this is only the beginning ;)  Although, maybe half way done is past the beginning, but the belly grows exponentially.

baby ree's present

Baby Ree's (my abbreviated version of Aiden's Scar-reeee nickname) xmas present - a tummy time quilt!  Aiden helped me cut and arrange (before Alphie the robot became much more interesting than fabric and I squeaked the sewing in during "rest time" and guitar time with daddy in the evening), and especially helped by boofing on the five outfits used in the quilt so they weren't presentable anymore.  But all that fabric - sentimental fabric - couldn't be thrown out.  So I started cutting and patched the five outfits together into this quilt.  I didn't even realize they had a puppy theme until I started piecing them together.  Good job boofing on thematic outfits Aiden ;)

I look forward to adding some initials or something in some of the empty spots.  Then trying to quilt the top and add the binding... which I may do by hand since I'm timid with the machine... we'll see...

santa again

Aiden saw his fourth Santa yesterday (including the special parking lot visit).  (He told him he'd like a Tolee's Treehouse - score, the Dora Dollhouse is off the radar!)  The RISD Museum had a huge Holiday Party with storyteller/singer Keith Munslow and a really nice looking Santa sitting in the Porcelain Gallery. The museum never disappoints but they'd really changed it up since we were there last. Aiden kept asking "What's that?" If I answered, "It's art!" He'd say, "Oh, what's that?" It was like a never ending conversation. His favorite was the interactive "sugarplum fairies" that scooted around the wall and jumped off in bubbles. We walked back to our car playing robots with remotes.

tree decorating

We have some other fun mini advent activities share later, but in the meantime here is an extended edition of the video from our Tree Decorating 2010.  I was laughing at J trying to lift Aiden seven feet in the air to get the snowman on top.  He finally had to stick his head in the tree with Aiden on his shoulders.

school friends

Aiden's school friend Mateo just turned three and had a Gymboree party. It was so much fun to go back to our old stomping ground. We also found out that Aiden's friend Aidan will have a new baby sister in March, so they will be brother buddies.

holiday hoopla

We took a trip to the Artist Exchange this afternoon for their Holiday Hoopla.  We voted with our cotton balls on which gingerbread house we liked the best, checked out the displays and crafts, and even watched a portion of the Christmas Carol play with a pretty good Scrooge.  Then we headed over to Trader Joe's and as we pulled into our parking space SANTA came trotting across the parking lot!  We waved and he came right over to Aiden's car window.  He told Aiden that he knew he was coming and to be a good boy ;)  Now we will really get good behavior because Aiden never knows when Santa will show up!

37 months

Hey Big Brother,

This month you wanted to count everything by miss-ha-sippy!  One mississippi...two mississippi... I can't even count the number of times we visited the library close to your school this month.  Right after I picked you up you insisted on walking to the library nearly every day it's not rainy or cold (which turned out to be a lot on this balmy November).  You'd walk in and say a nice library whisper voice hello to the squirrel in the big light tree.  Then you'd jump up the stairs and walk in like you owned the joint, asking "Where are my friends?"  It's never been the same kids twice, but you do like meeting someone to play with the duplo blocks, train table, puppet theater, or helmet bad and good guys.  We sometimes even stayed for storyhour, where you loved learning the Apples and Bananas song.  After we would finally leave sometimes after over two hours, you'd tromp the two blocks back to our car saying, "I saw squirrels...check... I crunched leaves...check..."

You bust out the funniest phrases which can sometimes even be too much to repeat.   The more innocent: "There are tickly bats in my nose - I need a tissue!"  The more grossly innocent: "My poo looks like a gigantic crouton - Mommy come look!" You are the funniest dresser.  Your flip and zip with your jacket always gets comments from strangers at the stores/restaurants.  You seem to prefer your underpants on backwards and wearing your shoes on the wrong feet, but whatever works is fine with us.

My favorite song change up: "Row row row your boat, life is ba-da-bing!"
My favorite conversation:
Aiden at Cow Patty Party looking at live cows: I don't want that cow to eat me!
Daddy: Cows don't eat people, people eat cows.
Aiden: No, people don't eat cows they're too big, they eat chickens.
Daddy: Then what are meatballs made of?
Aiden: Balls!

"Daddy, when you grow down, you're going to be just like me!" You call your dad "the best big guy in the world" and I think it's because your senses of humor match so well. I overheard Daddy giving you a bath the other night and you all of a sudden squealed that you "see another big one!"  My ears perked up and I soon realized that you were "pretending" there was a big bug in the bath tub that was going to get you.  Your dad joked that was #350 on the long list of "Things that Aiden and Daddy find funny that Mommy does not!"
We learned this month that you will be lucky enough to have a little brother.  I have a feeling that you are going to have a big fan in that little one and vice versa.  You are already giving the one you call "my baby" special hugs in his house.  You insist that your baby should be named Scary, which replaced baby Ellen as your name of choice (I think sometime during the ultrasound).  If we tell you Scary isn't a name for a person, you squeal "it is myyyy babies' name!" You said how about Cecil, and we hummed a bit, and you quickly replied, "Oh no, that is the name of a sea creature only!" or how about Snap, "Oh no, that is the name of a crocodile, not a person!"

You told the ladies at my favorite little clothes store that you wanted a baby brother, and some other little girl chimed in "I wanted a sister, but I got a brother too!"  You replied with "I love little brothers!" You met my friend's tiny baby Ava and you were so sweet and interested.  You pick all your big brother books to read before bed.  I think you are as excited as we are to meet this little one.  Although once the baby crib is moved in you will be sad that you can't do "snow angels" in the nice open room we've recently cleared.

This month you introduced us to your first imaginary friend, Johnskin.  You will announce that it is time to play with Johnskin toys, and we told you we didn't know what that was.  You said he was a funny guy, like Marvin the magician that came to your school.  We ask if Johnskin is in our house and you explain so matter-of-factly that he sleeps at the breakfast restaurant.  I think sometimes you are playing with Johnskin and he playing with some of your toys next to you.

One of your favorite things to do when we are waiting in line or at a table is to draw and write in the sky.  You will point your finger and write your name or pretend to draw funny pictures on our faces from across the table.  You were immediately drawn to what you call the "flip over car" and somehow conned your grandparents into buying it for you early this month.  It is two different cars one on the top and one on the bottom, and you love smashing it into things and saying hello to the new colored car.  The lincoln logs set you picked out with some birthday gift cards is definitely a hit too.  You like cuddling with "your grinchy and doggie" that Gran got for you with your Grinch that Stole Christmas book.

We drove to Ohio for Thanksgiving which was a bit of a crazy last minute idea.  You were so, so excited that when we stopped about two hours into the ride at our first rest stop you whimpered, "But Mama I wanted to go to GranGran and PopPop's house!"  I thought it was pretty funny you thought we were driving to go to some dumb gas station ;)  The nice McDonald's guys at the rest stop ended up giving you a free set of five Transformer robots.  They were good company on the rest of the ride and you thought it was fun to show off to PopPop when we finally got there.  You also lucked out when Daddy won a skee ball jackpot and had enough tickets to get you a Rex Toy Story figure - forget the cheap plastic spiders!  You were so excited you wanted to get in the car to drive to Ohio that minute to unite Rex with your Woody and Buzz friends.

You played so many fun games while we were in Ohio.  PopPop loved finding zurberts on you.  You would tell people, "I have zurberts hiding in my shirt" -or- "There are zurberts sticking to the ceiling - catch them!"  GranGran taught you a new poem to act out which you were hooked on - "The old grey cat is sleeping, the little mice come creeping, the little mice are nibbling, the old grey is waking, the little mice they scamper, scamper, in the night!"  Uncle Woah would tuck your balloon under his shirt and turn around again and again saying that the balloon must have disappeared - You laughed and laughed trying to point it out to him behind his back.

You loved using the binoculars to be "the kid that sees the scary thing far away!"  So you were usually wandering around looking through them giggling and occasionally bumping to things trying to talk with them up to your eyes.   You created what you called the "Which Look is Right?" Game - where you would look through the binoculars in all sorts of funny ways, upside down, with your elbow, etc. - then once you put them on your eyes correctly everyone earned a "star badge for winning!"

Even though my doctor won't let me pick you up (doggone previa!) and you weigh nearly 35 pounds, your cousins love to pick you up and carry you like "sack of taters."  You would quickly reply, "No, I'm the mashed potato!"  You got a big kick out of the elf talking back Target gift card and even recorded the "I'm a mashed potato" well quoted line into it.  You loved running around the house with that card in your hand in your robe and monkey slippers.  You will occasionally pretend your robe is a cape. Your buddy Aidan at school is really into superman.  You looked up in the dark sky and said "Oh look, there is superman pushing the crescent moon!"

You have a memory for bringing up obscure things I've nearly forgotten about.  Like when you saw some xmas lights up you called them "scary spooky witch lights" and I finally figured out you thought they were similar to the lights the crazy lady down the street used to decorate like crazy for Halloween.  You remembered the blue footed booby that Gran and Pop introduced you to from the Galapagos, and you made cousin Julie gut laugh just by saying the name.

Your music taste extends from all the kiddie songs you learn at school to the ho-down music at the new BBQ place to what you call Daddy's "loud music."  You like going down to the basement while Daddy is playing guitar in the basement.  Daddy switched over to play some acoustic and you interrupted him, "No, no daddy I want loud music!"  You hammed it up and sang songs for your fan club in Ohio.  The all-time favorite was the song about the turkey running from the farmer - "...with a gobble and a wobble and a waddle..."  I thought it was hilarious that when I asked you if you wanted turkey, you pulled a lyric from another song about having egg foo yung instead of turkey.

You've taken to calling every meal "a snacky."  You will give me the rundown of your plan for the day when we are walking out of school.  I want to walk to the library, play with some friends, then go home and have a snacky.  You loved opening your own little boxes of raisins which I bought for your snack at school.  You are still hooked on yogurt drinks and they really seem to perk you up in the morning.  You don't drink anything else besides milk and water and usually want both available.

You not only love to learn new songs at school, but you come home describing a new work nearly every day.  You are a big fan of the school's multipurpose room and you insist on using the word multipurpose as many times as possible when you bring it up.  "Mommy, In the multipurpose room, I saw you at the cash register in the multipurpose room during the book fair they were having in the multipurpose room!" You are always so excited to see your parents at your school even if I'm just working the cash register as a volunteer for the book fair.  Your dad made your day by coming in to your class to talk about Australia. Your friends now think your dad is a celebrity who loves marsupials.
We had your first parent-teacher conference this month.  Unfortunately, it was the same day you had "an incident" on the playground where you grabbed a five year old by his leg and pulled him out of the playhouse, so we ended up talking about that a bunch.  I always feel like you are the little yippy dog that doesn't realize his size.  Your teacher said it shows "leadership skills" that you want to play with the older kids, but that you can get really angry if they don't listen to you.  We had a long talk about how you can't get angry to get what you want.  Your teacher also shared that you are most interested in the "numerical" works.  She said that you are "beyond age appropriate levels" in your understanding of numbers.  She explained that you have one to one correspondence in your counting and that you appear to understand how to subtract.  She was very interested to hear about your garage sale snag of a toy usually for much older kids, the Math Turbo.  I initially thought it was worth a dollar because it twists and I knew that would be good for your fine motor, but you have seriously learned about addition and subtraction from it!  You also have a clear preference for the number cards for your Alphie robot.  The best part about Montessori is that she can see what you are interested in and give you more opportunities for specific work in those areas.

As I was finishing up writing this letter, here is the conversation you were having with your daddy up in the bath: Aiden: I love you so much... Daddy: How much... Aiden: Three million and five years.  That's a lot!  We are counting down the days until more holiday excitement around here.  Be a good boy so Santa keeps you on that "nice boy list."  Mommy can't wait to see the excitement on your face on Christmas morning.

Love, Mommy

day one

Happy Hanukkah! Welcome to December!  The countdown to Xmas has begun!  It's hard to believe that it is December already!  I've heard so many people say that, so I know I'm not the only one.  We're going to try to do a different semi-new activity every day leading up to xmas.

Aiden had a special latkes treat at school today which he apparently didn't actually eat.  I think he might have been too timid after seeing a Sesame Street cartoon where the family was eating latkes.  Sesame Street went off the rails a bit with a very depressing cartoon story about the war and a Holocaust survivor.  J was literally ready to turn it off, but Aiden was entranced.  It was a little bit too much early education for our three year old.

Today's activity was making the easiest cookies on the planet.  They are made with 1 cup brown sugar, one cup peanut butter, and 1 egg.  Aiden made them all into "monster santas" using some chocolates and pretzels.  They were delicious!  Daddy came home and asked if we made burnt peanut butter cookies.  Now there is the spirit!
