art by aiden

A cruddy iphone shot of Aiden's orange polar bear inspired by reading his new magazine.  He explained that "you can only see two legs from this angle but he actually has four."
On the left is Aiden's first loopy dog from the kit he got for christmas (thanks!) and a gingerbread man doorhanger from Aiden's favorite crafting place - the Newport Creamery!
We made crayons for Aiden's friends at school.  The task of unwrapping crayons is one of Aiden's favorite activities.  There were already quite a few unwrapped in his big crayon case.  Breaking them up was a blast for him.  My wobbly hands accidentally bent the silicon molds and a tiny piece of crayon hit the bottom of the stove and immediately started melting.  Ug, I will always put it on a tray now.
Learning to wet the watercolors with Gran:
Aiden's coloring papers from school -  He said that his scribble marks were "sparks" from the light.  This is the type of scribble he does to "fill in the lines" instead of stay in the lines:

puppet show

Aiden had a great time making a bunch of funny paper bag puppets.  He had this big show planned to "surprise" daddy when he came home from work.  He is getting camera shy lately, but here are a few snippets:

snow day!

We woke up to a winter wonderland!   It's a good thing because they cancelled schools everywhere before the first flake even fell last night.  It started just after midnight and is still going strong.  Amazingly Aiden slept in a good extra hour, although I woke up at the usual time.  It was nice to have some rare alone time watching the cats jump at the windows trying to snag the big flakes (this was the main source of entertainment because our satellite was out too).  When Aiden finally woke up he saw that snow and said, "Look mom it's snowy christmas time!  Maybe Santa came?"  Then he made up this funny snowy day song (I missed the beginning on the video, which was a bummer).
Aiden pulled on some of my "super" socks and "super" scarves, which he says is "super adult stuff," to complete his layers.  It was a balmy 32 degrees, so the snow was super packable.  We went way out into the corner of our yard to where the plows have dumped a big pile to build a little fort.  He "hid" in the fort and asked me to call daddy over so he could surprise him with snow balls.  We then went over and helped daddy clear out the driveway a little bit more.  He had piled up a big "Mount Aiden" which Aiden climbed up to play his shovel guitar.  After a long while, we finally headed inside for some gingerbread marshmallow men dancing in our hot cocoa.  We headed out again later in the day and more snow had fallen on our fort.  This time it had cooled off so the snow was all crunchy and not at all packable.  But Aiden was very excited to eat it, so daddy gave him a lesson in avoiding yellow snow.

Yes, I was stuck in here, but don't worry I had a coat that still zips (thanks to stealing it from my mom) - Probably would still be there if J didn't have a good heart and pulled me out.
Most of the rest of the day was spent playing Woody, Jessie, and the Alien (the towel head people) and building up farmland throughout the living room - the roads lead to the forest on the right and the "fluffy striped snowland" on the left:

yoga pretzel

We had a nice relaxed weekend around here.  Aiden and I went over to the indoor farmer's market with my friend and checked out a new kids yoga studio.  He just recently did his yoga DVD again and he seemed really into it, so I figured it was worth a try.  He was ready to be a "yoga pretzel" according to the instructor.  She set up an obstacle course for their open house, where he picked up pompoms with his "yoga toes," crab walked with a bean bag on his tummy, held a bell really still as he walked across the balance beam, laid on his back and flipped yoga blocks with his feet over his head to build a tower, balanced a shake egg and rotated in circles, grabbed ribbon wrist bands to do rainbow pose, and finally child's pose in the middle of the hula hoop.  He was hooked, so we're signed up for another class.

We also had some friends over for brunch since I had a hankering for some french toast casserole.  I made a new muffin recipe.  There is a batch of these headed into school for Aiden's class snack this week too.  They turned out pretty yummy except they are slightly green from the mixed berry applesauce.

Applesauce Oat Muffins

Ingredients

1 cup rolled oats
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup applesauce (I used mixed berry applesauce from Trader Joes)
1 egg

Directions

Place oats in a small bowl, pour in buttermilk. Let sit for two hours at room temperature.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease 12 muffin cups or line with paper muffin liners. In a large bowl, stir together whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda and brown sugar. Stir in oat/buttermilk mixture, applesauce and egg; mix well. Pour batter into prepared muffin cups. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of muffin comes out clean.

relief from my 24 week low rider

Dear Baby Brennan,

There's a pretty good chance that you will always be our baby.  That is one of the main reasons I am so, so relieved that my previa issue is totally resolved now!  Your placenta buddy moved up like a rockstar and is now free and clear of the danger zone - nearly 4 centimeters away (needed to be at least two)!  So now we are in the clear for a normal delivery assuming everything else sails along without any trouble.  I want to snuggle you immediately after meeting you without interruption, so I'm hoping that you and your partners in crime (the placenta, cervix, etc.) behave.

You like to keep your head so low during the last three ultrasounds that the tech could hardly measure it.  They said that at least you like your head down and hopefully you'll stay that way.  Although, you don't really need to wedge in there so much.  Especially when I'm driving - you're making your mom look like she wants to be in a low rider with her wide sideways lean.  I can hear that Low Rider song playing every time I cruise down Grove to pick your brother up from school.  There goes that pregnant lady imitating a low rider again, too bad she's driving a Rav.

You're usually riding low off to my left with your feet kicking on the right side.  You tend to stand straight up on your head every night about an hour after I ate and kick furiously upwards into my diaphragm.  This is going to get to be a bit more to manage when you weigh more than your current 1.98 pounds (according to your ultrasound yesterday).  You are measuring a bit over 25 weeks along now, but you just never know... I think you will just be a fairly big guy like your brother.

You have long fingers and chubby long feet.  Your brother came along with me to the ultrasound last time, and he laughed at your big toes.  He says that he's felt them through my belly and I think he's right. He is looking forward to meeting you once you "get born" and he tells us all the time that you plan to use crying to tell us what you want.  I think you are going to be a lucky little brother.

Keep on, keeping on little low rider.  I can't wait to rub those chubby toes.  Love, Mommy

family jammies

New Years Day my giggly boy and agreeable husband (who forgot his xmas jammies for xmas) agreed to wear our matching set (I've already added a set for the baby next year thanks to ebay ;)  Unfortunately, my top went missing, but I grabbed my opportunity.
Here is 2009.

first full day

Jammies at 23 weeks
I'm calling this my first full day of freedom.  Technically, I've been on vacation since the middle of December, but with all the excitement that really doesn't count.  It wasn't until Aiden was ready for school and out the door with J for his normal drop off, that I realized I had NOTHING that I HAD to do! Um, I'm not sure that I can remember a time when I had no commitment that I was obligated to do that day.  You know, where someone is holding you accountable and expecting something specific from you.  No tests, projects, or assignments that take way too much time away from what I'd really like to be doing.

I had complete freedom to do whatever I wanted.  I enjoyed thinking that I could take a shower without rushing.  I made videos without just using the magic maker on the flip.  I cleaned my bedroom closet and organized two sets of drawers.  I had a sudden urge to get my toilet very clean.  Because I had TIME!  I hardly knew what to do with myself.  My afternoon with Aiden was completely free of worries about whether my boss had everything he needed for a meeting the next day... or something else random and much less important than letter bingo.  I enjoyed every second.

Aiden and I started a new afternoon game he nicknamed "picture pages."  Today's page was about what animals do in the winter, and I honestly had to look up whether moose hibernate, migrate, or adapt (moose migrate, who knew?!)  I was excited that I had time to organize these new games.  I made dinner and J actually had a nice compliment - "It smells like real food?!"  You mean better than hamburger pie made with leftover taco meat?  It kicked off a new goal (at least until this baby arrives) of cooking more dishes that may actually appear on the Food Network.  Today was panko encrusted chicken breast with a mustard dill glaze.

This weekend we visited the Coggeshall Farm in Bristol on a whim.  We were actually trying to go to the Audobon but it was closed, so we drove a little farther down to the snow covered farm.  We weren't sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a "living history farm" which means there was a woman dressed up pretending she was from that era (which is pretty popular in New England, eh?)  She reassured us that the turkeys chasing after us and gobbling profusely weren't going to hurt us, although we should watch out for the geese.  Yep, um, I was scared, although determined to not show Aiden I was scared of those birds running after us.

Aiden was thrilled to learn about how to make butter and to help feed the huge pig, so I just let those turkeys chase after me (I could swear they were more into terrorizing me than anyone else).  Everything worked out ok, but when we got home I ended up calling my midwife because I had a tiny amount of blood (for the first time ever).  Yep, I was blaming the turkeys for tensing up my uterus and possibly affecting my placenta situation.  She was very reassuring and didn't even laugh at me, and I can't even tell you how good I feel about my decision to use a midwife this time.  She told me to pay close attention and if I bled any more to call her right away.  I was free and clear of any further problems, minus the turkey nightmares - just kidding, sorta. But I was so relieved and my midwife even called me in the morning to check on me.  I did manage to keep my sense of humor about those darn turkeys.  They wouldn't gobble when I had the camera on, but here are the harmless huge turkeys just hanging out behind us, a bit too close:

38 months

Dear Mr. Rosy Cheeks,

I will remember your rosy cheeks and happy spark this month.  You were also nicknamed "35 pounds of cute" by your doting grandparents.  You also picked up Aiden Bobblehead from your silly friend at school, Alyssa, who has a nickname for everyone (Aidan Whitehead for your other friend).  Picking your brother's name is still in progress, but you get pretty adamant about a name you like for a few days - like last week you wanted to name the baby Marco.  If I suggested, well, maybe Mark?  You'd get feisty and insist "No, no, no Mommy Marc-O!"  Uh, the name game is getting interesting.
You had so much fun helping celebrate your Gran's 60th birthday in Ohio.  You kept the surprise by being nice and quiet as Gran came up the stairs to her surprise.  You loved the hippo cake and helping Gran blow out her candles.  Being surrounded by your family energizes you and you are so lucky to have such big group of jokesters.  You will tease them, and you are catching on to even the classic Uncle Billy teasing.  Sometimes as your bed time creeps later or you've been woken up from an impromptu nap, you will start squaking, but it is quickly replaced by giggles when you realize you have a bunch of family smiling at you.  I told you a few times this month that you were "out of No for the day" - You had used up all the Nos and couldn't say it anymore.  You actually seemed to follow that rule, but we'll see how long that lasts.
A symptom of seeing plenty of movies recently (specifically the awesome Omnimax movies at the science center) as you were starting your own "show" for us, and you announced, "Ladies and Gentlemen, Be sure to turn your cell phones off!"  You find many random objects that serve as your microphones, usually for some rendition of the many christmas songs you learned this season.  Your repertoire of songs is much, much larger than mine at this point and you are sure you get the words right each time.
You love an excuse to ride an escalator or an elevator.  You will carefully step on with a little hop and you watch for the end very patiently.  You were the best travel buddy when it was just me and you on the way home from ohio.  You were very determined to get home to your daddy and that was what motivated you to behave.  "Mommy, If I'm a good boy, I get to see daddy soon!"  On the way there, you were also a good boy sitting next to daddy playing many rounds of M&M wars.  Many M&M's were smooshed and munched during that flight.
You loved a new What's in the Cat's Hat Game you got from your aunt, uncle, and cousins (thanks M, J, K, and T!)  You like using clues to play guessing games so it is right up your alley.  Your auntie and uncle babysat you when we were in Ohio and they discovered that you would spend tons of time writing words on the computer screen.  Gran helped you spell out some fun stories, and your pre-reading is in full force now.  You think sounding out words is a pretty fun game.  Your new Tag reader (another thanks!) scans over the words and you will actually read them out loud as you scan.

You started independently writing your name sometime in the last two months.  It was hard for me to keep track because you came home with some papers in your school bag with your name letters written on them.  Initially, you would just get the five letters on the page somewhere, but now you are keeping them in a line most of the time.  You've come a long way from tracing the dots in a pretty short amount of time.  You even agreed to "work hard" to sign every one of the thank you notes that you'd recited to me for your fun presents.
You are pretty excited whenever you enter a new museum and the science center in Ohio kept you excited even after three visits.  The Discovery Museum here in Mass held your interest too.  It is fun to see what you get excited about and watch your little eyebrows raise when you try out something new.  I am really glad that you have a natural inquisitive approach.
As we hung out at the science center one afternoon, you really believed that Santa had called my voicemail to tell you he was on his way because you officially made it on the good list and to leave him a grilled cheese sandwich (thanks to K!).  You reminded me that you wanted to be sure that the reindeer had some energy too for their takeoff, so you asked for carrots.  When you woke up you were so excited to see that Santa had eaten his grilled cheese.
This year the christmas presents were opened in nice easy going rounds.  There were about five rounds of present opening throughout the day, you lucky duck.  You were super easy going and enjoyed helping everyone else dig through their stockings and open their presents too.  I'd imagine that as you get older there will be a more frantic pace to opening presents.  I do think that you like being an elf and delivering and helping open presents.
You ditched any sort of consistent napping completely this month, and instead you would occasionally fall asleep in your red plastic chair or on the ground in front of your book shelf.  I wouldn't really say that you fight being tired, but you'll just konk right out.  You do fight waking back up though and those quick naps are worse than the long late naps which keep you up singing to your animals past bedtime.

Sometimes you say things that sound very grown up.  For instance, I think you got a kick out of telling people "I don't have time to talk - I'm busy!"  I think you kept saying it only because of the giggles you'd get in response.  Since we were crafting something nearly all month long, you started saying, "It's time to add the details."  You will look at me in a quiet moment and say "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

Santa delivered a paddleball, but the actual ball was a little bit dangerous, so we converted it into a "pretend" paddleball which I think you were even more excited about.  You would duck and go "woah, here comes the ball, whack!"  You love to really act out your pretending.

This fun turtle ride on at Gran and Pop's is even more fun now that you can really zoom on it.  You asked to fly high like a mario turtle while someone held the turtle under you and zoomed you around.  You love of Wii breaks at Target was expanded to Wii breaks at home thanks to a nice present from your Nana and Grampa.  It's hard to believe that my three year old has been introduced to the Wii, but I guess it's just a more interactive version of the tv and your imagination keeps going even after it is off.  You also just love the Sing It game that has all of your favorite Lion King songs.  You are usually listening to the song and mumbling away. The Just Dance game my cousins had in Ohio seemed to mesmerize you into some sort of dancing trance.
Poppop would ask you, "What kind of cheese do you want on your grilled cheese?" and you'd look around like he was crazy and reply, "Grilledddd cheese!"  If he gave you the actual cheese options you'd get kinda bossy pants and repeat, "grilled!"  The bossy business can sometimes be nipped in the bud by asking you questions:
"How bossy were you being?"  A: A little bossy
"How bossy should you be?" A: Not at all bossy

Your dad used his thumb to count number one, and you insisted that you should count one with your finger and you count "happy" with your thumb.  You were in the habit of adding 'ed' to verbs to A: make it cuter and B: make sure we repeated it for you with the correct pronunciation.  It's fun to see how you interpret language and how not just your vocab expands, but how you use it is growing.

You brought up a bunch of times that you loved helping Gran "blow around" her birthday cake candles. You had so much fun playing animal "tea party" with a specific blue capped cup.  You would pour a pretend cup of "skunk tea" or "porcupine prickly tea" which you would then expect a peeyew or ouch reaction from when they drank it.  You would serve tea with nearly non-stop giggles.  Then you'd go floating down "moose moss river" to find more animals.

You love making up your own songs - Here is one I managed to jot down which I think it pieces of other songs you sang at school:
"Taping taping through the woods
We go every year through the snow
We seem to go extremely slow!"

You like to make up new "ideas" that you explain in detail.   One of your ideas was a new instrument, which puts a drum on the end of a trumpet, which you named a drumpet.   You nicknamed the berries you eat at lunch "chuckle berries" because they make me [insert big guffaw]  I love to ask you more and more questions about your made up ideas and hear you make up more details.

I think you are the perfect blend of your dad and me.  I think you've picked up most of our better attributes. Your dad is very patient and helpful when something is missing.  You will help me if I'm looking for something, and the other day you said, "If you can't find something, you just need to get a hint."  You can turn anything into a game.

You try to imitate the hibachi chef by tapping utensils and banging the salt and pepper around on the table.  Your Uncle David would up the ante for you and show you some new tricks.  We pretty consistently eat in the dining room instead of the kitchen now.  You are learning to ask to be excused from the table when you are finished.  You are also not as squirmy in your chair as you used to be - thanks to your school I think.  Although, I did feel like it was a small miracle that you didn't fall from any of the high chairs along Gran and Pop's kitchen counter.

You love to giggle at the same stories or jokes over and over again.  You brought up the "crazy otter and max game" I think more often than any other.  Although the good ol' why did the blank cross the road - to get to the other side is a close second.  Crazy otter came from this ridiculous news story we saw about otters attacking Floridians in their backyards.  There was this home video from this guy that was cooing at the "pretty little otter" and then all of a sudden it attacks him.  So you think it's hilarious to reenact this with your Wild Things Max and your hand as the otter.

"Magic is when one thing disappears and reappears in another place... that's called magic!"  You like to explain things that seem like magic to you - "You heard Peanuts' footsteps, but then Sophie appeared - Magic!"  I heard you explaining your funny little ideas to your friends.  You will also recite funny little lines that you hear and they are usually a little morphed - "I am a robot - I come to peace!"

You have a habit of marching right in the door wherever we go.  Your favorite new restaurant is a place you call "Howdy BBQ" and you will bust right through the door shouting howdy!  You are usually pretty good at restaurants, but sometimes you get a bit overzealous.  Like when you won at tic-tac-toe and yelled "I won" in the way-too-quiet restaurant.
When we were saying goodbye to everybody in Ohio, you gave huge squeezes and said, "I'm going to win the prize for the best hug!"  You definitely get the "Best Hugger" prize from me.  Earlier tonight you wanted to spin with me, and once we were all dizzy, you asked to give "my baby" a hug.  You then wrapped your little arms about half way around my belly (since it's getting too big for your arms to reach all the way) and whispered, "Hey baby, thanks for spinning with me!"  That is the best.  Rosy cheeks are the best.

Love, Mom

snowman

Aiden called this his surprise snowman.  It was a warm morning and the snow was uber packing snow that picked up the grass underneath it.  It was sticky enough to hold that fruit at least with enough cheek bone snow additions.  We snuck this in before heading to the airport on our last day of a nice full trip of fun.  Miss you mucho!

happy new year!

Baby 2 at 22 weeks in Ohio
Happy New Year wishes to everyone!  Cheers to an exciting 2011!

I rang in the New Year by sleeping.  I can't imagine a better way to kick off a year of future sleep deprivation.  Aiden and I plan to party with our tivoed versions of the ball drop later on ;)  To the left is a photo of us only five short years ago screaming in the new year at a comedy club in Tucson.  It was fun to reminisce about the runny eggs they served for breakfast at 12:30am and think back on how much has changed in such a short amount of time.  We had no idea as we screamed in 2006 that we would be moving our lives from Arizona to Rhode Island in just a few months.

This year is predicted to be another big one for the Brennans!  There is a chance that we will be moving somewhere (yet to be determined) this summer with an infant and a 3 year old.  I get that tears tickle when I think that our new baby may not spend his first xmas season in Massachusetts/Rhode Island, but I know we will be happy wherever we are.  I'm just a big sentimental sap, and I lamented that we may not have a photo in front of my mantle (the one I had built for hanging Aiden's first xmas stocking) next year.   J joked that we'll just have to come back and visit the buyers ;) (willing there is a buyer!)  This first house will be tough to leave behind... Aiden's first home.  Oh, I'm getting ahead of myself since the pregnancy hormones are raging.

I'm feeling good lately.  Trying to take it easy as much as I can which I think will be much easier now that my work life has finally ended.  I think if I added up the craziness last term, it may qualify as the busiest I've ever been for that long.  August to December was just crazy and I feel pretty good at how well I maintained it, but I'm really glad to have left that window of time behind.  I'm ready for a slower pace, and more deliberate life.  I look forward to having more choices in how I spend my time versus working on Drupal (despise!) and other work related uh-hmm-crap.

The baby is so incredibly active lately.  Whenever there is something fun going on outside the belly, he jumps all around and knocks to come out and play.  He really seems to like a good belly laugh.  He can definitely hear what's going on and when we went on our date to see Tron I think he was excited.  He got an epic bout of the hiccups for about an hour the other night - I just laid in bed thinking about how I'd love to be asleep, but I will miss this feeling when he's on the other side of the belly.

Aiden says that "My baby can hear me and wants a tickle" and he'll push his little ear up to try to hear his brother "talking" to him.  I tried to tell him that that baby can't talk yet, and he told me that he talks by crying and then pretended like he could hear 'his' baby crying from my belly.  He asked if the baby would like to play Wii the other day.  J's folks got us a Wii for xmas and J found a deal on a Fit board.  Surprisingly, my huge pregnant self came in with a Wii Fit age of 30 - I cringed thinking it would be worse, but minus one year from my actual age ain't bad.  A nice little boost when you feel like you're entering the whale stage.  Honestly, I don't feel that big this time because I know that it gets much, much bigger.  I have a feeling that this upcoming year will be much, much bigger than the last too.  Here's to enjoying it just as much.
