23 months

Hi Keaty,

You run up to me with a favorite shirt on or an animal to hug, and declare, "I cute baby guy!" Yes, I'm your super biased mom and you're my sweet, cute baby guy who is getting to be such a big boy! How can you be a month away from 2 years old?! When you're two you'll still run up with your arms held out wide, yelling "Huggie, hug, hugggggie!" ...you'll still throw your little shoulders back when you get excited... you'll still give me that scrunchy smiley every once in a while ...you'll still want all the "big spicies" over the "baby sized" ones, right?! Right?! I know that it just keeps getting better and better, but pease and tank you for staying baby sized a while longer?!

February with all its hearts and love (despite being my least favorite blah winter month) taught you to pick out hearts everywhere and kiss everything with your "tulips" - You say two lips really fast and your brother even created a new riddle about a flower on your face to add to his expanding joke book.  You love to laugh as he reads the jokes, because you go along with whatever mood your brother brings. If you guys are after the same toy, your brother likes to tell me that you have a "fake say" when you come to complain about him taking a toy from you.  He's not calling you a liar, just a fake sayer.

You will shout out "Whoa, I fast!" after crashing head first into the couch or chair of your choice.  I'm just glad you pick the cushioned spots most of the time.  You are such a funny guy that if you fall over you will say "Sorry, I ok!"  You love the little chairs we have (you have a blue to match your brother's beloved red) and you even have taken to running while holding the chair on your back like it's a turtle shell.

You are getting the hang of going down steps and you want to try them on your own.  You love hanging like a monkey at gym class, jumping on the half ball, and running with a tiny gallop.  You like to get to the gym early and "help" me pull out the mats so that you can run in the big circle, your favorite part of the class. Or maybe second to parachute time. They have a mini parachute at the Children's museum but they don't let kids go under it which you think is a total sham.

When your grandparents were here you enjoyed calling out "Dinna time!" They joked, "Are you sure it's not Breakfast?!" So you hopped around and said, "Sure, Bekfast time!"  You love seeing your grandparents and despite feeling icky you hopped in the van to go pick them up.  It wasn't until a few minutes after we picked them up that you showed us how sick you really were.  Poor bub.  You still wanted to play and you went from giggling to running to me to get sick in less than 5 seconds.

You like to repeat things that get people to laugh.  You say all the parts of your knock knock jokes over and over.  Knock, knock who's there? Are you? Are you who?   The funniest thing that you like to repeat every time we take you outside and it is cold you say, "Santa coming?"

You love the Sneaky Snacky Squirrel game, and when you don't have any other distractions you will take turns nicely and play it for a long time especially when it is just you and me. You know to match the colors and will usually announce which color you are after. You especially like singing the Patty Cake song with your daddy.  You are more willing to go to sleep all on your own with daddy's help lately. You will say "Sleepy Nighty Night!" and trot off to your bed.  Now if we could just convince you that 5am is too early to wake up for the day.

You guys love to jump around just like your jumping Hex bugs.  That arena gets hopping and you guys get the jiggles.  You thought it was fun watching the Super Bowl and cheering go, go, go whenever you spotted the ball.  You still love playing soccer  which consists of a lot of chasing after your brother. You usually want to do whatever it is that your brother is doing including trying to play chess. You're pretty good at helping carefully move the pieces. You know the "red turtle guy Radfiel" and April are your favorite figures to demand. It's hard to believe how much you imitate your brother and even harder to believe that he is usually patient with you.

You are at that age when sometime you say something very distinct over and over that we can't quite figure out. For instance, ACoap = Coat. Some garbled expressions sound exactly like other words, like you were running around squealing "89!" Turns out it meant 'it feels nice' when daddy tussles your hair. You would shove your little head under his big hand for a little rub.

You loved seeing Mickey on Ice and were genuinely peeved that he didn't stay out the entire show.  You called out "Mickey Mouse!" in your sleep loud and clear.  You love the new Mickey cd where they sing your name and you dance with Mickey as you listen.

You can sing along to the alphabet song really belting out certain letters: P, S, V!  You've started using the past tense more than you used to.  You like to refer to all circles as soccer balls.  You hear birds chirp and yell out "duck!"  You hear a plane and say "see plane UP in the sky!"  You love to say Upe with emphasis.

Sometimes when you are grumpy you throw your fist out and wave it whatever is bothering you.  But that little cute hand can't look that mad.  If you are tossing cereal or crackers on ground you will shout out Sorry as you do it.  You frequently ask to sit on the potty seat (and even left a little valentine's treat) and then ask for "pivacy pease" (just like your brother).

You like to ask for specific things to eat.  "Juicy water pease!" You accidentally started gobbling your brother's very realistic playdoh cookie.  You were so bummed it wasn't real.  You have weird preferences like dipping raisins in soy sauce.  You love asking for "more roni please! I like pepperoni" Then the strangest is slipping a pepperoni into your water and stirring it up into "roni juice!"

Your shoulders have a lot of expressions. When they are hunched forward you are a little scared as you confront a snake face to face through the glass or a flock of birds at the zoo.  When they are spread back when you are excited to bang drums with dad or head over to the swings.

This month we spotted a few throwbacks to your scrunched up smiley face where you added to the cuteness with a nose kiss.  There were plenty of tree huggies and general hugs to go around this month.  You would pull back from a nice hug and say "Oh, that's perfect!"  Then my heart melted.

Love, your puddle hearted Mom

jungle

A big welcome home to my folks from their three week African adventure. Aiden was very excited to take them on a tour of the jungle he created in our guest room. There is PopPop parrot, Gran-d waterfall, King the lion, and a Lulu monkey hanging out in there. Along with his idea of fun branches and leaves... They can sleep off some jet lag in the Aiden jungle! (Thanks to them for helping so much yesterday when KC and I fell to this horrible flu - February, the blah month, had to figure out a way to go out with a bang)

hike

This winter continues to spoil us rotten!  Just when we need a little break from the dingy weather, it brightens up and a "coat choice day" comes out.  Aiden's school has some days where they get to choose whether they want to wear a coat on the playground - Aiden, the hot box, says he always chooses no coat!  We were driving with our car windows down the other day and headed out on the loop path for a little hike.  KC's learning not to run so he doesn't biff it and the art of staying on the path is getting there.  There will be more hiking with just the two of us so that he can get the hang of it - He's in training ;)

poor bub

After getting sick over and over and over again for nearly four hours, twice in the car and three times once we arrived at the hospital... Our poor bub gets sick with enthusiasm too. It came on strong and fast after a normal cheery night at choir. After some magic anti-vomit pill he was flying high and feeling ten times better. Within 15 minutes of letting it dissolve on his tongue, he had what he was convinced was a magic light saber Popsicle... And then asked for another just so we knew he was A-Okay again! Seeing your kids sick has got to be up there on the worst list... Stay healthy!

nature center deux

Numerous costume changes trying to figure out the best combination of predator and prey.  Aiden liked to think that his bee was the most powerful.  The frog was poisonous so he was ready to go after anyone.  Look at that squished bear face intimidating the stuffed fox.

adventures in eating

Adventures in eating with the Brennan brothers never cease to amaze me. This Korean BBQ is popular and they played Gangham Style twice while we waited to get in for a late 1:30 lunch. AB and KC giggled and jumped around with gangham arms. I offered Aiden some sweet noodles and he agreed to a little bite with some disgust. Then his dad offered him a fish dish with eyeballs clearly visible AND he gobbled up bite after bite! I think he ate every little fishie out of the bowl - with a "Yum, salty! That's the brains and bones too, daddy?!". Who knew that telling him he could eat the eyeballs would encourage him - I'm going to put eyes on his broccoli ;)

dancing dogs

The Rocking Dogs are a new kid's band looking to rock out with some NoVA families. They had a fun show complete with an air drumming contest (see video below) where Aiden won a pair of drum sticks! You can see in the video that KC thought it was pretty shammy that he wasn't also allowed up on stage. But he was pulling out the giddy scrunch face we haven't seen in a while along with some nose kisses, so I guess he liked rocking out. Aiden loved their original Cookie song and a funny song about not being able to find your car keys - where Aiden used his imaginary magnifying glass to search all over the dance floor.

mickey on ice

The story of this event starts with super dad trekking to the ticket booth on a random Thursday morning to get our $1 tickets - one dollar each, yes, you read that right - amazing! They were giving out a certain number of tickets (normally about $40 each) as a promotion and our grumpy daddy nailed some awesome seats and even won a frisbee waiting in line (for about an hour). We spent exactly $4 on tickets and nearly 8x that on parking ;).

Anyway, Mickey is Keaton's absolutely favorite guy. When Mickey first appeared on the ice, KC's face lit up with the kind of giddy smile and wave that gets etched into this mommy's happy memories. KC looked like a deflated balloon when Mickey left the ice for the other classic movie guys (highlights on Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lion King, Aladdin, Snow White, and many more princesses). He shouted, "Hey, come back Mickey!" Before the big grand finale the poor guy traded in his nap card and fell asleep in my arms. He got about 80 cents worth of his ticket though ;)

Aiden was hopped up on $12 cotton candy (which his brother scrunched his nose at...) The red ears that came with the sugar rush were a great treat for our red lover. He danced and responded to all the calls out to the audience with his awesome brand of enthusiasm. He said his favorite was the giant blow up tick tock crocodile that ate Captain Hook... With Pumba and Timon as a close second in their Hakuna Matata routine.

J says his rock concert to Disney on Ice ratio must always stay at a 1:1 ratio... Right now he is even with two Disney ice shows and two big concerts in the last five years. So somehow I agreed to a Metallica concert someday...maybe for $1?! ;)

stomps

This week was full of boots stomping around the wet yard. Big brother lego playdates were pretty smooth even with a little brother stomping in occasionally. Someone likes to stomp in for some early morning wake up calls lately.

family dance

Aiden's teacher is part of a folklore group in this area that puts on a family dance once a month.  It's contra dancing which reminded me of PE class in elementary school.  Aiden was so excited and loved dosido-ing and sashaying - He was thanking everyone for bringing him and insisting that I mark my calendar for the next one.  KC couldn't quite keep up, but he liked the cookies and the feeling of the vibrating feet on the ground... poor tired guy.

happy heart day

The love bugs were working really hard today, and according to Aiden, those tricky guys turn everything into hearts! Pancakes, lunch treats and even the dinner meat loaf! There were 45 valentines created, written and distributed between Aiden's class and the play group party. Aiden practiced his knot tying by stitching FL shells on to his school valentines (thanks to Gran for helping find enough with holes in them). KC was pumped for special Barney love songs and valentine stickers at gym class. I was pumped by the treats and crazy good croissant egg sandwich at a new bakery. So many treats in one day - thanks love bugs!

happy valentine's

From my little valentines have a happy one! Love this from Eric Carle.

sunshine

I felt like we were soaking up the sun in today's 60 degree temps... Riding with the windows down, we headed straight to the park after picking up Aiden. We even met one of his buddies from school there. Keaton loves the tunnel slide and today the long rays of sunshine through the trees put on a bonus light show inside.

navy museum

We got our special approval to enter the Navy Yard and head to the "hidden gem" museum. KC spent the majority of the time trying to peek inside canons and pretending to be a robot like the scuba suit guys. Aiden spent nearly the whole visit snapping his own photos and KC insisted on holding his own camera and pointing it at every thing without actually snapping a shot. We spotted our van in the parking lot through the giant periscope. They even let you sit on the rotating launch seat.

interview with ab

There are some moments when you still seem like my little spunky toddler guy and other when you are such a big kid.  You are a saavy little guy and when you got a new doggie bank, who gobbles the coins, "He's not hungry for pennies, he needs more quarters!"
What a daredevil kid:
"Look Mom, I'm riding with no hands!"
"I'm a monkey professor!"
"Look Mom, these glasses fit my new nose!"
This getup below inspires singing of Italian Christmas carols -
"You can come see me up close now that I've had my bow, see my fuzzy mustache?!"
One word to describe you would be: Crazy!
Why do you like being a kid?
Cause I get to be crazy...uh uh, blah, nah, nah
If you could be any animal, which one would you be and why?
Baby Cheetah because they are cute and because cheetahs are really fast
Tell about a funny time in your life.
Practicing football with daddy
What is your favorite thing to do? Why?
Rub Keaton on his head and give him a pat pat pat
What do you love most about your sibling?
He's cute and chubby and very ticklish
What was the nicest thing you did for someone?
Let Gran Gran have two of my grapes
What do you think you will be doing 10 years from now?
Homework
What is the grossest thing you can think of?
Poop
 What is your happiest memory?
My first day being in Mrs. Healey's class when I was two and I remember I kept forgetting her name. My favorite time was when Daddy came into my class to talk about Australia.

skipping

Somebody was asleep in the car when we arrived at Mr. Skip's monthly dance party... He played shy guy and then Mr. Giggles popped back out to play!
