bday tidbits

My boys got the memo that it was my birthday and everyone (and their good behavior) was on board for a nice birthday full of treats. J and I both like to spread out gifts and why wait until a specific day to share some birthday cheer?! The boys both crafted for me and I can't tell you how charmed I am that Aiden can sew now! He hid himself in his bedroom and stitched away at that stuffed owl kit on a couple different occasions with a few bits of help from his dad (whose sewing knowledge is probably on par with Aiden's now). It is such a fun surprise treat! Keaton drew on this schnazzy new bag and he was very proud to carry it to the library. J found a shirt with tiny words from one of my favorite books, Jane Eyre, which was a surprise among other gifts like a new Fire stick for the tv.  The cookie cake with another owl was a huge treat we all got to share.  So grateful to my sweet family and friends that all wished me happy birthday too!  It's so great to catch up a bit with friends near and far and I even found out about three new babies on the way on my birthday too!

The new Children's Science Lab setup at the mall is right up the Brennan boys' alley. You could see the excitement on their faces and even more smiles when Keaton dubbed himself scientist kid.  The majority of our time was spent with our chairs pulled up to the Experiment Bar to enjoy the current menu of experiments: Magnetic Slime, Bubble-ology and Floating Rainbow. The magnetic slime is still a hit here at home. The Tinker Shop had a wind tunnel to test out some hover crafts and a chance to play an electric piano by conducting electricity through your fingertips into the magnetic slime.

Kondo's Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up is like a phenomenon that can't be avoided in the mommy blog world. I read excerpts and even though I didn't start talking to my clothes, I did purge. Lining up my clothes on their sides has made it so much easier to find what I need.

The CTY Alumni network posted this old photo from the year J and I met in Rhode Island - It is a #tbt to 2001! You can find us in the Where's Waldo shot in the upper left corner.  I think this was taken as we headed out to the 4th of July parade.

Our intrepid geocaching buddies went back to the tricky cache by the newspaper stand we couldn't find after we got a hint online from a really nice guy. Turns out it was a really cool one hidden behind a flat white magnet!

J and I had a chance to play tourist in DC and take a segway tour all around.  It was a breezy day with the highs in the 80s so it was perfect for a cruise around town.  The boys were with their favorite babysitter who happens to be the sister of Aiden's friend, so it was one big party all afternoon for them!

intl cache day

It was International Geocache Day this past Saturday. In 2015, we are celebrating the 15th year since GPS signals were descrambled, increasing the accuracy of GPS devices worldwide by ten times and the first geocache was hidden.  To celebrate, we headed out to Frying Pan Farm where we knew the kid's geocaching camp had hidden many different caches many years ago.  We found two before getting too sweaty and hot.  We peeked in at the animals trying to stay cool. The boys also took home a new stuffed raccoon and bat from the general store to celebrate.

art show

Keaton finished out a week of Abrakadoodle's "Paws, Claws and Hooves" Art Camp with an art show.  He was so excited to give us our invitations the other day. When we walked in all the kids were sitting in front of tables full of all their hard work... and the best part is that in unison they all roared at us from behind their lion masks. Then all the kids shared their favorite piece of art from the week. Keaton's was his lion mask and unicorn horse.  My favorite was the bear paw stamper he created to stamp all over his tissue paper forest.

These old buddies were out on a geocache hunt!  We managed to find the first one we looked for thanks to some very persistent big kids, while the little kids played on the playground.  Then we tried to find two more but we were thwarted by a high creek bed and one that is super tricky near a newspaper stand.  They did find a pokey caterpillar on the fun playground. They were quieter with that ice cream in their hands than any other time that day ;)

Our two weeks of day camp have ended but it was a nice way to break up the summer a bit in between trips and summer fun.  Both the boys called into the radio station on our long morning drives to the spot that I thought would be closer (darn traffic!) I wish I had Keaton's recorded but they never replayed it like they did Aiden's... but he was sharing what he was really, really looking forward to - and it turns out he can't wait to ride a train! He told her about how he loves the metro and can't wait to visit the big train.  She asked him which one and he said Strasburg with the cutest four year old pronunciation. So i guess Keaton picked another summer adventure we need to go on soon...

The Draw 50 books Aiden had at school were missed, so we got a bunch out from the library. We found his schnazzy pencil set and he has been having fun... He says he's working on his shading.

This big moth/butterfly guy greeted us one day at camp drop off and he was still there at pickup. Aiden was nervous getting so close to him but wanted to show that he was bigger than his head!

Lemonade at the thai restaurant with the comfy chairs and a visit to the new square park in downtown Fairfax.

Reading with daddy at the library is just as fun as bedtime.

This dragon and knight can entertain themselves for quite a while.

It was a beautiful day for a visit to Old Town. We cruised first to the still new Sugar Shack for their light, crisp donuts that were yummy despite the lack of chocolate flavors. Then a visit to Why Not to check out the toys, a walk through the farmer's market and the Torpedo art galleries. The magician charmed the boys and really shocked Aiden by pretending a coin fell out of his nose. Then we stumbled upon the Irish Festival right on the water.

These kids had the maximum amount of fun creating and playing Peter Pan in Space this past week. The whole idea of aliens taking over the story was exciting to all the kids.  I'm not sure if you can follow the full story from this video, but you get the idea.  Best part: everyone having fun.

Aiden is excited to perform as Peter Pan in Peter Pan in Outer Space later on today.  I'm probably just as excited to see the show!  Earlier this week he worked really hard and stitched his entire hat which he was truly excited to wear the next day and show his director. The director was full of compliments when we checked in that morning and said that she has a part for him in their big production (which has adults too and unfortunately practices until 9pm which is a deal breaker)

They had theme days this week.  He put together this outrageous alien on the bottom left and practiced his hook hand and arrrrgh on pirate day!

circus

This summer might be circus themed mainly for all the different circus we have visited. This was Cirque Italia, the only water circus in the world ;) They don't actually swim in the water but the fountain action is pretty fun.  The blindfolded tight rope walker and the woman spinning by her hair were quite a site... but nothing tops the moment when the mermaid lost her tail (bottom left pic of the moment) and I don't think I was the only one that wasn't sure it was supposed to happen at first - ha!

library

We are summer reading program groupies... This summer it's been a pretty good variety of fun between singing with Andres, a robin hood-esque musical review, and legos in the library. The boys got their coupon books a while back, so there is more fun to enjoy!

This guy thinks summer time is the best! Brother time galore, swimming whenever you want, and tons of fun trips this month, what could be better?  You do this big jump underwater in the pool and hold your breath, which makes attentive life guards squirm since you hold it so long and float around. We saw another circus and you were again in awe of the action. You were most psyched to be enrolled in your very own mini camp for the first time. You are so used to dropping Aiden off and longing for your own chance. You were so jazzed to tell us all about it each day and especially to perform at the end of the week. Not a shy bone in your body!

One word to describe you would be: Toy!

Why do you like being a kid? Because it's fun because you can play with toys and stuff

If you could be any animal, which one would you be and why? I would be a baby tiger because I can pounce!

Tell about a funny time in your life. When Siden was coming around, I think it was Halloween and before, and we were at Target and Aiden saw a not real gorilla and he was Ahh! then he found out it wasn't real.

What is your favorite thing to do? Why? Play toys because I like to have toys.

What do you love most about your sibling? When he plays toys with me.

What was the nicest thing you did for someone? When I clean up my toys with my mom

What do you think you will be doing 10 years from now? Doing work like daddy

What is the grossest thing you can think of? When we eat gross food.

What is your happiest memory? When we watched Inside Out and that was the happiest movie!

aiden's show

Aidan's CARE camp wrote and produced "The Case of the Missing Banana" - He was Ben Bird, a very active hummingbird. I love kid written anything and I think this has so many little golden nuggets.  I think they did an awesome job especially after just a week!

keaton's show

Both boys went to Act It Out class this past week. Keaton's class revolved around a story and a lesson each day. The boys woke up ready to go out the door each morning, and I think they loved it even more than I expected. Keaton was especially excited to put on his "very own show for the first time!" He has been a good audience member for Aiden's show and now it's his turn ;) Here he is as the tiger with a realistic roar in the class telling of Giraffes Can't Dance. (My favorite and an audience chuckle moment at 1:38 when Keaton does his best interpretation of the first move in the dance sequence in that old movie You Can't Buy Me Love)

radio

Aiden made it on the radio with Ab solutely Mindy again this week.  This time she was asking kids to call in to tell them adventurous things they will eat even though they won't eat the crust off their sandwich.  Aiden has a really good one, thanks to his dad's idea to eat some bacon and cheese flavored crickets...

On a nice summer morning we cruised into town with daddy who dropped us off at the metro station just outside of town. We were planning to see the Roberl Strong magic show at the Ripley theater under the National Mall with our buddies. Before the show we had plenty of time to look around the Castle which houses displays representing each of the museums. The have a cool computer that makes mosaics from your photo and tons of tiny photos of their museum displays.  The show was a hit as expected for all the boys.  They all got a chance to get up on stage and learn some scarf moves. Then afterward the farmer's market was going strong and we found rainbow popcorn. The kids all ate some snacks under the mesquite trees.

surprise

We managed to surprise my dad for his 65th with a birthday party a week early at an unexpected spot, Scholotsky's Deli! There were party quizzes created by the clever Mommu (which I won this time!) and many cupcake cheers ;) 

buddies

It's always so relaxing to hang out with old dear friends, but especially on a nice shady playground on a beautiful day. We also found two geocaches (one hidden by that garden on the top left - hint hint!) and we topped off the day with some yummy ice cream.

ride em

The good ol mall is pretty much a kid heaven. They upped the ante with these charmers - giant stuffed animals on wheels!  You can zip around on them all along the mall corridor, and it is truly a blast. Check out those fun faces!

pool

We hit the Willo pool I grew up visiting, and man it was so fun!  Between the big waterslide and little slide and water fun in the little kid pool, both boys were so happy and it really felt like a vacation spot. The prices at the snack bar seem to have stayed the same too, so 5 cent candies, yes please?!

staying cool

Summer heat hit Ohio right in time for our visit to the Farmer's Market and then a bit later in the day for the Willoughby Art Fest. We carted the biiiig boys around in the double stroller which was convenient and once they were carrying snow cones they were pretty content to look around at all the sunny booths. My sister paid attention and got me the coolest wooden board for my birthday, so that's a big win!  The crab cake sandwiches were another big win!  Then we snuck into the library to cool off a bit more. The boys were thrilled the summer reading revolves around super heroes in the Willo! The boys were super excited to color and stick pennies on their own balancing supermen. Then we had a chance to catch up with the whole family for dinner and some water table action.  Wish I'd gotten more pictures with all the family - eek, how does that happen when I take so many pictures?!

waldameer

Waldameer is such a fun little park!  Aiden drove with Keaton as his bumper car passenger and both of them can ride nearly every ride in the park.  Aiden rode the big rollercoaster with his PopPop over and over again. A highlight was bringing home a bounty of new stuffed friends from "winning" the games.

boogie

Last week we boogied into Willo town and headed straight to the DTW music on the square. After fueling up on some crepes, the cousin buddies grooved it up!  It was the start of a really nice visit.

Happy Birthday J! What a rockstar year it has been! Rock on! We love you!

Update: we celebrated with a Cirque de Soleil Varekai show, kid made chocolate cake, and BBQ.
