Woaaah!

What a good time!  I hardly know how to explain all the fun we had at Lizzie and Woah's wedding celebration extravaganza.  We kicked off the week with a nice easy flight to Ohio (probably the last where Aiden doesn't get his own seat - thank goodness!)  O-HI-O is even more fun when the almost the entire family is in town at once.  Thursday we had the crazy coed Bachelor/ette party while Aiden partied it up with Gran and Pop - they deserve a huge thanks for getting him down for us!  Downtown Willoughby did not disappoint and was dubbed the Vegas of Lake County.

Friday we started out early visiting Squires's Castle for Liz and David's engagement shoot with the wedding photographer that Liz and I worked for in Tucson.  He shot some awesome shots and I just can't wait to see the wedding photos soon.  We took a quick trip to the apple farm to try to find Liz's favorite apples but we were ten days too early for her variety.  But Aiden had a great time tromping around the farm and picking out little pumpkins.  Then we headed over to the Rehearsal Dinner (before the rehearsal which was scheduled for the next morning).  We all enjoyed the yummy Italian food and the "Lizdom" my mom shared with David.  Aiden started dancing at the restaurant and there wasn't even any music - turns out he was getting warmed up for his dancing fever the next night.

Saturday we headed over for the rehearsal in the rose garden at Mooreland (same place where J and I got married over five years ago).  J got all set up for his duty as the musician (which he did so well despite cold fingers - everyone liked the Journey Don't Stop Believing finger style guitar arrangement - so subtle and fun).  Aiden made a touchdown getting the pillow all the way up to David during the rehearsal - and he was told he'd get playdoh if he gave David the pillow (which he is surprisingly loud playing with because he tells you the colors and what he is making).  He chanted "Woah gets pillow, A gets playdoh" as he marched down the long path to the front of the garden.  We had my cousins on backup for the actual walk which went fairly well.  He got excited that dada was playing guitar (which we were worried he'd insist on playing), but he was distracted by playdoh). He and the other ring bearer (3 months younger) paused at the fountain (which was turned on for the first time) and I thought the pillows where going to be floating in the water.  Luckily my awesome cousins were all on the baby herding patrol and they managed to get him moving again. I wouldn't really call it a processional but they made it up the aisle.  All I hoped is that they would make it without any fussing and they did!  Thanks to my uncle Gib here's a video snippet of the baby wrangling:

Aiden ripped up the dance floor the minute it opened. It was wild to watch him. He was so excited to dance and clap!  I joked that I had enough ham bone to make some really good ham soup.  My sister's friend told me that most kids are good birth control for her, but A made her want to have a baby - ha!  He danced with his favorite family members.  He lasted until just past 11pm, which is when he was dancing on his knees.  He was getting so sleepy but he wanted to keep going!  His sweet daddy took him home and they were both out when we all got home.

The next morning was a big family picnic at Daniels Park, then we headed home. Woah, quite the whirlwind of fun!

edaville!

We made it to Edaville Railroad today and it was even better than I expected it to be.  Just enough park for a little guy, and a great chance to catch up with J's aunt and cousin and her little guys.  When we first arrived Aiden nicely waited in line with us and only tempted to jump in a few big puddles.  We walked up to the first ride and I read the sign wrong and thought I could fly with him. But turns out he was well over the height limit and he was suddenly riding solo giggling at us.  My B-A-B-Y on a ride S-O-L-O!  I still can't get over it.  We rode every ride, some twice before Aiden was all tuckered out.  As we left in the car I asked him what his favorite was, he said the elephants and the horses (of course, another carousel!)  I have a ridiculous number of videos of him on the different rides that I'll have to work on narrowing down later... but there are two quick edits of the first ride and the train ride.

They were harvesting the cranberry bogs which was a cool sight to see.

Aiden was not that interested in the Storybook characters they had visiting today. He waited in line nicely, but thought it was a bust when we got to the front of the line....guess visiting the big guys wasn't as cool as the rides.

Aiden and Daniel were riding buddies!

rainy day recipe 2

Another rainy weekend day and we had to change our plans to go to the Storybook Festival at the Edaville Railroad (we will get there sometime this year, maybe even tomorrow if this rain clears up). Instead we took a trip to the outlets for some shopping. We spent a ton of money on new socks and I got a great deal on a fun new knit coat. It's definitely the transition into Fall.

Our mutant tomato plant took off again and we ended up with so many more - about doubling the batch that J had used for his buffalo tomato sauce. My neighbor said he had one tomato this year, so somehow we got really lucky. So before they rotted on the counter I managed to get my hot little hands on a food mill - either these are very popular or everyone already has one because I couldn't find one anywhere! I think that having the food mill makes this tomato soup creating sooo much easier than blanching and seeding, etc. (and we can use the mill for good apple sauce and even mashed potatoes)
Alphabet Tomato Soup

8 cups chopped fresh tomatoes
2 tablespoons-ish garlic herb spice
2 tablespoons-ish dried basil or fresh basil chopped
1 tablespoon onion flakes or one onion chopped finely and sauteed
4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons white sugar, or to taste
1 cup whole milk
alphabet noodles

DIRECTIONS
In a stockpot, over medium heat, combine the tomatoes, onion, garlic herb, basil and chicken/veggie broth. Bring to a boil, and gently boil for about 25 minutes to blend all of the flavors. Remove from heat and run the mixture through a food mill into a large bowl, or pan. Discard any stuff left over in the food mill.
In the now empty stockpot, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux, cooking until the roux is a medium brown. Gradually whisk in a bit of the tomato mixture, so that no lumps form, then stir in the rest. Add in milk. Season with sugar and salt, and adjust to taste. I then added almost a whole box of mini alphabet noodles and let them cook for about 7 minutes (so the noodles were al dente so that when it's reheated they won't be too mushy). It made a big batch for this week and two batches to freeze.
Total Time: about an hour! (poor J spent almost 4 and half hours on his sauce)
Yummy eating triangle cheese and alphabet noodle tomato soup for dinner (ignore the big discolored bumps on his head - especially if you are getting married in a week and you want your nephew to look cute - he had a run-in with a feisty new kid at music class - the kid hit each kid in the class with a shaker and his somewhat oblivious mother snagged him to go home within 20 minutes - rebecca felt terrible - it will heal in time for the big day - no worries):

hippo poem

Hippo's Ticket to Ride

Mama's 30th birthday

There was a hippopotamus
who thought perhaps a lot of us
would like to sit upon him for a ride.

And so that hippopotamus
splashed out and made a lot of fuss
making cautious people run and hide.

But then that hippopotamus
felt glad he got a lot of us
still brave enough to ride his big backside.

While on that hippopotamus
a camera got a shot of us
riding with great smiles full of pride.

Learn now from hippopotamus
if ever asked to trot with us,
take a chance, and jump aboard to ride.

(I just got around to scanning these all in this past weekend to create a cute little hard cover book for Aiden to read someday.)

bye bye south street

We took another quick trip this weekend up to visit J's Nana as she gets ready to move to Arizona! We had trouble getting Aiden to sit still for a photo, but he was happy to help pretend to take photos and check out the old photos of Dada and "the boy" (J's twin, Uncle Matt). He finally understood that the old photos were actually photos of his dad as a little boy. He also learned that acorns make little trees as he climbed up and down the old "hill mountain" in the woods next to Nana's house (which is actually a nice little barely noticeable slope that J loved to charge up to the top as a kid). I think everyone was feeling a little sentimental. That was the house where J and his brother came home from the hospital as babies, and it's hard to believe that he was able to step foot in it 30 years later. I know Nana will love her new adobe in Tucson, but South Street will always carry so many memories.
Super J helped get these really high family photos down:
Aiden likes to give hugs after he's seen you give big hugs:

baby bbq

We had an invite to an early Labor Day BBQ on Saturday. It can best be described as an infant fest complete with a water table, mini pool, the very popular trike, and a cardboard house to paint! Can't forget Rock Band to keep the daddy's happy. It was fun to play with the other kids and Aiden had the most fun when the sprinklers unexpectedly turned on giving us all a splash.

bonk buddies

It goes without saying that seeing an old friend is better than just about anything... better yet since AB loves his Uncle Bonk too. The giggles, new frogs, carousel, and beach were the the best reasons to visit the Cape on Labor Day weekend (no traffic either way!). Thanks for meeting up Bonkie. I miss you already!Big and Little Bonks:

22 months!

Dear A,
Towards the beginning of the month your favorite phrase was, "I going to try." You wanted to try out everything for yourself. You insist on walking up and down the big staircase completely on your own - you sometimes get insistent that we are spotting you too close, but we have to explain that you need to be safe. You wanted to "try" the camel and the horse at the carousel the other day. I've been saying that you will remember this summer as one big carousel ride since we've been making the rounds to ride so many different old carousels.
We did a bunch of projects in the basement this month. You probably didn't even realize there was a basement until recently. Now you will wait at the gate if one of us is down there and say, "I want to come" but we're still keeping you gated away from at least that area. The other gates have slowly disappeared, and the big snake gate left the old barn room for its renovation and it never came back. You can jet up the stairs faster than we can turn the corner lately. If your dad goes upstairs to play guitar, you will sweetly beg at the stairs, "Dada, I missss you" - oh the baby manipulation is so cute, for now.We seemed to drive over and under bridges a couple times this month in the car. You loved to say "woooh, we under".... then you would say "back outside! let's go inside!" We switched your car seat around to forward facing finally this month because those little legs were just a little too bunched up. It gives you a whole new perspective and you like looking out the front windshield at things your dad points out.
You had your first peanut butter smiddgens this month. The first bite was you swiping a bite of my peanut butter banana bread, and then you wanted more. You probably noticed me watching you for a reaction, so you went "mmm, yuuum" - oh that's my boy! You and I will be sharing peanut butter treats in the future. You also wanted to learn how to cut, so we got you your very own mini cutlery set with a knife that cuts "safely." You only practice with us, but you're getting good. Now if only you would eat one safe bite at a time instead of trying to stuff your hungry mouth.

You got your second official haircut this month. I'd been trimming it myself, but I thought for the sake of your upcoming ring bearer duties, it should all be evened out. I emphasized that we wanted to keep some length on top, but the pregnant hair stylist was distracted or something so it ended up pretty darn short! It took a little getting used to, and you kept looking at me strangely when I stared at it and kept trying to pat it. It's as if you were saying, oh mom, it will grow, don't worry about it.

You had a little run in with your dad's bedside table late this month. You got a pretty big bite out of the side of your mouth. The blood ick caused you to want to drink two huge cups of water and then you spent about an hour sucking on ice cubes that I wrapped up for you to hold. Otherwise they would slip right out of your fingers and you'd say "uh oh slipperrrry..." We knew you were doing better because to get a good look at the damage, we'd ask you what a lion says, and you'd roar a big roar with enthusiasm.

When you were excited after getting all dried off after swim class you would bounce down the corridor doing your little happy walk. We thought it was pretty funny when you'd get in the pool and squeal from the cool water and ask for "more hot." Swim class was a good treat for you this month. You've even started practicing your scoops and bubble blowing in the bathtub now. Whenever we mention that you are swimming, you explain to us that "Tyler swims, Aiden too."

You started pulling on our pant leg when you want us to go with you. You usually are headed outside and you are especially interested in going out in the rain. If we ask you to use words to explain to us what you want, you will usually stop grunting and pushing and explain what you'd like. I am glad that you are getting better at using your words because I think it is one of the key ways we will avoid meltdowns.

You get super excited by things every once in a while that surprise us. My sister sent me a link to this random article about a high speed chase in Willoughby (not a common occurrence in small town Ohio) and there was a video of the police car's dashboard camera. You started cheering, "get the guy, get em, getm." It made Auntie Liz giggle on the skype, which meant that you kept doing it.

You seemed to develop a real sense of humor this month by actually trying to tell jokes. Here is your first "joke" (while holding up a yellow A): "Ha ha ha! This is a red I. Ha ha ha!" Also: "Monkey is an elephant! Ha ha ha!" You would come down from your bath when gran, pop, and liz were in town and hop around like a crazy hooded towel bunny. You even hopped right out of your diaper once. In our new big open room, you got excited about spinning and saying "I spin! I spin! I dizzy!"
Your vocabulary sometimes plays little tricks. For instance, seagulls are called white ducks, and ostriches are flamingos...which sounds more like "mingo." You love this Tails book that my mom bought you and you learned all about lemurs and bush babies - Now everything with big cute eyes that looks remotely like a monkey you like to call a bush baby. When you say bush baby it is so darn cute.
You started asking us to ask you the questions. You will repeat "Aiden, what is this?" until we repeat it, then you will say "Um, let me see..." You will have this funny little pause and then you will blurt out the answer with goofball excitement. I get a kick out of asking you new questions to see what you will say. I asked you what kind of sauce would you like, and you answered "um, saucy sauce puh-ease." A very typical way to distract you from something that is getting you worked up is to ask you something like, "what number is that?" You get it right most of the time, but you make us laugh when you say number I. If we ask you how old you are, you will usually quickly answer that you are one, then when your dad says you're right, you will then blurt out, "oh nooo, I twooo" He'll say "no, you were right you are one" you will get insistent that you are two. It is your way of having your very first practice at "arguing" with your dad. You better watch out because he's a professional arguer.
You had a little raspy cough at the end of this month (your first in a looong time). When you called me when you woke up in the morning the other weekend, you sounded like an old man. You somehow picked up the idea that PopPop is an "old man" which you thought was pretty funny. You would make us all laugh by saying "Poppop old man, Ainen little old man..."
Your Dad and Poppop asked you what pop started with and you replied "p-o-p" - Whaa you can spell? I know it's crazy and a flukey thing, but seriously you have these little hidden tricks that you use to impress people. J's family was very impressed with you when you went to visit them to celebrate Nana and J's shared birthday and you spelled out apple from one of their old country signs. You were apparently the talk around the docks in Cape Cod that week by your proud great uncle. You now do this all the time because your dad thought it was so fun. He asked you how do you spell Dada? And you read the letters off his tshirt - B-R-O-W-N. I guess that is a creative solution.
If you asked me what my favorite things about this month were, I'd probably imitate you with a finger to my lips and say "um, hmmm..." - because that little expression of yours is one of my favorites. I also liked seeing how you would help us by throwing out my trash and fixing the strap on daddy's shoe. You were so proud to be able to help us out. One of my least favorites may be the little feisty games you learned somewhere where you have alligator fighting with dirty elmo. But I'll survive the mini fighting games, given that if I ask what you are doing you will usually reply with "um, hmmm... kisses?"

Mucho besos to you my little kisser, Mama
