half year plus one

Dear A,

This has been a month of concentrated concentration. We've packed in a whole lotta spring time fun and concentrated on the important things. Your dad and I were lucky enough to get away to celebrate our fifth anniversary at a little Seekonk bed and breakfast. Your Gran and Pop took such good care of you and you had so much fun that you barely noticed we weren't around. It was my first night away from you in nearly 19 months, and I definitely noticed you weren't around. Thank you for being such a good boy and making it easy to give us a little staycation.
This month you learned to wash yourself when we name a body part, but you will usually only do it when you have two huge fists full of soap. You also figured out what the shower is and you usually want the "rain" instead of the splashy tubby time. You've become so enthusiastic to "help" you started throwing your play food in the trash. But we are glad when you decide to pick up after yourself and even put your laundry in the shoot.
Our little big boy that takes a shower, goes to the potty (usually just to sit - but with some success!), buckles (and even unbuckles occasionally while riding in the wagon!) his own belt, and eats with a fork - oh where, oh where did my little baby go? Good thing you can still wear little hippo jammies - Here you are saying, "waait, i didn't agree to photos"
You have a new little doctor's kit to pretend with and when you look through the ear scope daddy teases you and asks, "what do you see?" You will giggle when daddy answers, "ants eating cheese? chocolate chip cookies?" The ants eating cheese story comes from your recent encounter with ants at a family bbq. You were excited to feed bits of cheese to a big group of ants. To your delight, one even got on your hand, as it crawled around on your hand you suddenly poked at it and shouted "pop" - who knows where you learn these things?!
Your newest favorite is play doh! We found these little molds that make elmo finger puppets, which you usually pull the eyes off of immediately. You love to stamp out shapes and your favorite is the blue moon.
Your sleeping habits are pretty unpredictable in general, but you have been a fairly good sleeper lately. Even when you started waking up in the middle of the night and asking to eat, you would still fall right back to sleep. You like your big boy bed, but you are mostly excited to bring your beach shovels and buckets onto it and pretend it is a big sand box. You like playing in your room and especially playing ball before bed. You were especially excited when Gran and Pop were here visiting this month to play catch. You will announce "caaatch" and tell us who to throw the ball to back and forth - Pop's turn, Mama's turn, A's turn, Dada's turn, Gran's turn! At bedtime we eventually we can get you to slow down with this fun animal cd that sings the alphabet and has a matching book. Our favorite is when Ollie the Ostrich plays the oboe, which you mistake for elbow and giggle as you try to toot your elbow. You will listen closely and sometimes sing along and eventually fall right to sleep.
You are a playground guru and you've extended your climbing skills to try to climb up on the tables in the house. You're learning to keep both feet on the floor. You will sometimes intentionally slide your little legs apart into the splits and get "stuck."
Your preferences are very clear lately and you tend to stick with the same favorites. You love to read in the car and your favorite pick (even if I bring other books to the car) is the starfish shiny things search book (which sounds about as exciting as it is especially after a bijillion times reading it). You continue to like playing with shoes and especially trying to tromp around in dad's big foamy sandals.
Gran taught you a new game where we will hide something and then you will go on a hunt for it. We will ask "is it under" and you will search there and answer "nooo" in that cute little soft voice. You learned that little cute word (which I hope stay cute as long as possible) from your Sandra Boynton "What's Wrong Little Pookie" book. You just love to read about what might be wrong with little Pookie and say "aat's illy" and then at the end say "um, I fooough-get"
Your flap books are by far your favorites this month. You are usually really good with them, except those circle shape flaps that you find hard to resist yanking off. When looking at the unique animals book, you immediately started asking "whaaat is thaaat?" When we visit the zoo you like to declare which animal is your favorite - usually the giraffe wins that prize (especially now that there is a baby giraffe). You love animal noises and you like to quiz us on the animal noises. You will say the noise and you want us to say the animal, then you shake your head or say yes, yes, yessss.
We took you to a mostly adult party earlier this month with J's colleagues. You were a charmer and even shook people's hands although some people got more of a "low" five instead. You were really good about trotting around not causing too much trouble. The most trouble was trying to interrupt your dad as he talked with some leg cuddles and insisting on sipping orange juice from a little glass mug (which you must have thought was just sophisticated enough for this wine party). You spent most of your time kissing their new kitten and playing with their dog Tommy. You wandered around mumbling Tom-eee and squealing every time he gave you a little lick kiss. You are so darn cute when you say Tom-eee that if I was having another baby soon (which I'm not) I would name him Thomas just to hear you say your brother's name in such a cute way.
You really concentrate on things lately, and sometimes so much so that your little tongue comes out. We look forward to more careful concentration as summer starts.

Love you little buddy, Mama

beach blast

Today was full of fairs, bbqs, and beaches (with shovels and kites!). Doesn't get much better than this:

not for the blog

This will not become a potty training blog (because I don't know anyone that really wants to read about that), but I can't help myself from recording this for posterity: Aiden pooped on the potty for his daddy this afternoon, while I was out shopping with my parents! We so far love this step by step potty training "system" that goes over the toilet seat or on its own base. We're taking it step by step, but if he sticks with this level of interest we shouldn't have any trouble "getting into" the wee-three Montessori program before he actually turns three (it's specifically for kids that turn three in the fall months)... oh no pressure, really ;) We're hoping to never actually have to train him, but just show him and let him do it when he wants to at his own pace... so with that attitude, we will clearly need lotsa time, eh?

Gran and Pop are in town! Yay! We've been off at the school fair getting Aiden's mug on this cute safari scene.

spring family

I had an urge to get spring family photos as a mother's day treat. We ended up with this student photographer that was sorta iffy, but there are some decent shots. It's nearly impossible to get a good shot of all three of us and keep Aiden in one place for more than a couple shots. We also had to wrangle Aiden away from the hissing swan and the water. She had her work cut out for her, so I guess we should be happy with what we were able to get.

refresh

Memorial day was such a nice break from a bizzzz-y commencement weekend with four events with over 1,000 people at the four events we hosted combined. Phew, it was the third time I was here for commencement and it was a charm. Although I missed Aiden and J terribly especially on the thirteen hour day. They made the most of the weekend though and had a chance to visit Great Nana at the Rainforest Cafe (which he loooved) and go to a farewell BBQ the next day. I felt like I really missed out - boo - but I'm really glad that they had a fun-o-rama.

But Monday made up for it by being one of those gooood days where we ended up at a new zoo, ate some egg salad for lunch, played on the playground, boogied to the kiddo band, and got some shopping done (yay, I even ordered my dress for my sister's wedding). The absolute highlight for Aiden was the Zoo Choo Choo which he even told Rebecca about when she arrived this morning. He was telling everyone that he rode in the blue car. I have some fun video of him babbling and waving hi to everyone on the train I'll have to post later.

hey doc

Today was Aiden's late scheduled 18 month appointment. Right when we walked in, he got really excited by the big knex ferris wheel and especially the fact that there was a cookie and a duck on it. He also wanted to take a walk down the hall a bit. He made friends with this little four year old girl, and kept smiling and inching closer to her, and when she went to leave he started getting fussy. Luckily, they called his name right then and we got to go back to the room.

As they measured him he said "taaall" and smiled at the nurse. Then they had him sit on the scale and it struck me how big he looked on it now. He weighed in at 27 lbs 4 ozs (66th) at about 33.5 inches tall (90th). The doctor came in and he was such a good bubbly boy. He trotted around the room while she inputted his info, throwing a smile her way over his shoulder. He wanted to use the stool to jump up on the table. He stood up with his lip sticking out while she examined his ears. Then when she was trying to use the same tool to look in his mouth he kept turning his ear towards the light. I'm not sure she ever got a good look at his mouth, but I think she could see his teeth when she tickled him and got him to laugh.

No shots this time, which was a nice surprise!  I think overall he liked his quick visit and we're glad that we have only been to well visits for over a year now!

random updates

We finally replanted our little garden bed with vegetables! If it goes as planned and the bunnies don't feast on it, we should have green peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, and white eggplant in 50-75 days.
Aiden has coveted his dad's big sippy bottle, so J got him his very own mini version. We will stay hydrated this summer ;)
It was a sad day this week when the big ball I used throughout my pregnancy and Aiden's baby days deflated. We got a new identical ball since our little guy has such a love of bouncing.
Aiden watches dad finish deflating the slow leak in the ball. I'm just too sentimental and crazy so I kept it. Any crafty ideas for a deflated plastic ball?

good list

Gymbo gets the spot on the top of the good list this month. There were no kisses from Gymbo at the end of class for a couple weeks because everyone was worried about the swine flu. Aiden comes home with a hand stamp of Gymbo that he sometimes tries to "pull off" his skin.
We originally found this book on one of our trips to the library in Ohio with PopPop. It was an instant hit and Aiden just can't enough of the flap flipping. He is good at finding even the tiniest little flaps.
These little yum-meisters are so, so easy. They have a little sweetness to them and are really good baked. They aren't the same as a fried falafel, but I like them just as much. Aiden doesn't know the difference ;)

at the zoo

Aiden went to the zoo again this week with Rebecca and his buddy Tyler and his mom (twice in one week!). We got a season pass with Rebecca as a card holder so that she can take him and bring a guest. When I asked Aiden if he had a fun at the zoo he started signing friend and saying Ty, Ty, Ty-er. Then he pointed at Rebecca and said Ba, to be sure I knew that Ba was there too.

Tyler is Aiden's little buddy from school. They were closest in age, but Tyler is a few months older than Aiden. Tyler's mom brings him to Gymboree so they still get to see each other twice a week even though they both left school in January. It's fun to see how they've bonded and they definitely are buddies. They liked to try to hug when they'd see each other at Gymboree, but they have to be sidetracked from that because it ended up being a body slamming contest. So, now they greet each other with a hi and the chase game ensues. They were holding hands walking around at the zoo so that everyone would stick together.

perfect

Huge thanks are due to J and Aiden for the perfect day:
- Eggy french toast, mmm (yes, that husband/spoiler-o-mine added a dollop of whipped cream), and the house smelled like bacon all day.  Perfect start to the perfect day.
- Aiden signing off the skype with my parents and repeating "love you"
- J suggesting we hit the zoo early to beat the rush...and not scaring me too much in the bat cave
- Aiden actually answering me when I asked him who his favorite animals were - He said the "g-raffes" and the "bear"
- Aiden continuing his nap while J waited in the car with him while I got to do some shopping
- Aiden (and J) wearing a paper crown and beebopping to the music in the restaurant for a late lunch where the queso was really yummy
- Sharing a ride on the carousel where Aiden was comfortable enough to ask to go up and down
- Sharing an ice cream cone before heading inside the fence to the "boundless" playground
- Aiden being excited to play with his new kitchen where he wants to stir in every bowl and eat the bottoms of the ice cream cones
- Winning an ebay auction I was excited about
- Watching the season finale of my favorite show

play kitchen!

I've been mulling over creating a little play kitchen for Aiden to test drive...uhhmm, for mommy to play with... ever since I saw a bunch on ohdeedoh posted that were created with parts from Ikea. So, as a little mother's day treat, J agreed to drive up to Ikea on this rainy day and let me scavenge around. (We also had our share of swedish meatballs) J had a good idea to use a cork trivet for the burners, but we ended up finding these rubbery soap holders that are even more realistic looking and just the right size. There were also rubbery knobs that match and they turn, which so far is Aiden's favorite part.

Ingredients: A european sandwich plate for the cutting board area, the perfect sized bowl for the sink, a pillow case double pleated for the skirt, a perfectly sized bedside table, $22 dollars and 2 hours alone in the basement while Aiden went to the Children's Museum with Dad. I find it hard to believe that it took me nearly two hours to drill four holes, jigsaw the circle for the sink, stitch the little skirt, and assemble the table, but it seemed a lot quicker than that... maybe because I was excited ;)

better mommy

To my mom, who makes me a better mommy: You're always there to remind me of the words to the rhymes I can never remember, and bring a smile to Aiden's face when you sing. You've taught me the importance of giving back and not giving up. If I could go back in time to those nearly failed SRO dance performances in fifth grade or that biology test I failed in college, I'd listen closely to what you said to encourage me. I would want to hear how you handled those situations, so that I could remember how you brought a smile back to my face. Let's hope that I'll remember more than just the rhymes you've taught me, so that I can share with Aiden.

To my husband, who makes me a better mommy: Just this week you accidently scared some baby bunnies with the lawnmower, and you took the time to scoop up those little itty bitty baby bunnies and make sure they were safe and secure again. I know you would do the same for your baby buddy and for me. I know that you would do just about anything for us actually... all of your hard work and your time outs to take care of us make me feel safe and secure.

The simple, everyday little things that people around me do to support and to cheer us on, you make me a better mommy. Thanks!
Thanks to my thoughtful husband who sent flowers for me to enjoy at work all week, took Aiden over to stamp his hand on this pretty plate, and even picked up some peanut butter from this little shop in Maine while he was there for a conference this week. He's also enthusiastic (not-so-much, but feigned excitement at a minimum) about reading and doing a project in this new crafty book that he ordered for me. We'll see how that goes... For now, I'm off to eat some of that yummy breakfast you're cooking up. Yummm, smells good.

happy cinco de mayo!

Waah? It's the fifth of May already!? We had a hard choice between margaritas and coloring. Aiden picked coloooors! Hope someone is enjoying a margarita for me.

happy half

Here is a sappy happy birthday video starting with Aiden at six months through this week... It isn't quite even, but has plenty of unseen footage from his little baby days... oh what a smiley:

Happy Half Birthday! from LB on Vimeo.

birthday ice cream!

one and a half!

Dear Aiden,
Wow, you're my one and a half year old boy! That is A-MAA-ZING! How did the time fly? How could all that cuddling, giggling, wiping, learning and not sleeping take up that much time already?! You've become our little kid. Our little kid that has likes and dislikes?! Your opinions and attitudes are so obvious now. How is that possible when just two short years ago we had just learned to brace ourselves for your arrival? Your arrival into our lives and into kid-o-hood is ah-mah-zing.
You continue to love your library visits. One has a guinea pig that you get excited about the minute we mention it. For some reason, J calls it both a mouse and a guinea pig (He's making mouse into a whole category of animal - ). So you usually will alternate between the signs and noises... squeak, oink - poking your mouse sign and pulling up your nose to pretend you're a pig. You are using words more often than signs now, which seems to be just a natural transition. Although your little girlfriend at Gymboree still signs with you. Your buddy Tyler just looks at you funny when you sign, but he does understand when you shout his name when you get to Gymboree. I guess you miss him when he isn't there and you'll wander a bit repeating "friend" until Rebecca explains that he isn't there.
You are still considered a lap child on airplanes even though I think that you are quickly outgrowing my lap. I think we're going to have to get you your own ticket that says something other than "Infant Brennan" in the coming months. On both flights we flew together this month, you were an angel, and when I say that I mean the kind that sits in clouds and smiles like care bears. You were cuddly and the only occasional upset was when you couldn't quite get the light to turn off for you. You only slept about a quarter of the time on both flights, but the time flew with all our books and the SkyMall catalog to keep us busy. You sipped Mommy's apple juice a little bit, but mostly you oohed and aahed out the window and pretended your arm was an airplane.
You've taken to try to identify numbers (even numbers especially, not sure why), letters (A, B, C, D, F, R and T - not sure why), or colors (all, except you think grey is blue) unprompted. At the beginning of the month, your default letter was B and your default number when asked how many was twoooo. Your dad and I are sometimes in disbelief when you are able to come up with the right letter... it's hard to believe how quickly you absorb things. (My default is to think that your nanny rocks and I get crazy already thinking about your next childcare step - which at this point I'm hoping you will get into this Montessori program we've heard good things about...) We think you like B so much because your dad wears his Brown sweatshirt so you ask which letter it is every time you see it.
Just as often as we're in disbelief with how much you are learning, we are in disbelief in how quickly your mood can change. You can go from happy to squirmy to sad back to happy in under a minute. You went through about a two week period where you would scream as loud as you could for attention. We tried to quiet your little screaming jags with some silent cheering with our arms (which was a trick that only works for certain people, not mama). If I try to shush, you have learned to put your finger up and shush back at me. I'm just glad that little phase passed fairly quickly. We're ready for the next challenge without an easy solution.
If we ask you a question you have taken to putting your little finger to your lips and saying uummm, before sweetly saying a quick no or suddenly cheering a big yessss! You are big on saying "stuck" when you need help, although you are learning to say "elp" instead. It's funny if you're waiting for help up a big step saying "I'm stuck"... Your other new favorite if you throw something when you aren't supposed to or hear a loud noise is "uuuh, oh".... My favorite is when you want to sing If You're Happy and You Know It just so you can shout "hooo-ray" and throw your arms in the air.
You've really enjoyed talking on the phone lately, sometimes too much. On mornings when I may have left the house before you wake up, you will point at the phone and ask for mama. Your daddy will dial the number and hand it over, and when I answer you immediately giggle "hiii, mama" and start with your babbly talk with real words thrown in occasionally. It is the cutest thing and I swear it gets me through even the most boring pile of work. You had an oopsie about half way through the month where your new sharp tooth and molar teamed up to try to cut through your skin below your lip. Rebecca called me and I figured we should come home to check it out since she said that it wouldn't stop bleeding. We were all prepared to take you to the doctor, but it hadn't quite cut through and it seemed to be healing over by the time we got home. You were so excited to see mom and dad in the middle of the day, I think you could barely contain your excitement. It was nice to see your happy face instead of taking a trip for stitches.
When we say "away" (like "the bunny went away"), you immediately pretend you have thumbkin in your hand and put your arm behind your back. You are really picking up some funny tricks from all those library lapsit rhyme time games. Your little hand games are funny to watch. Your little uncoordinated attempts at a thumbs up and twinkles are so darn cute. Although you have become a marker ninja getting the caps on so quickly. One of your favorite games lately is fast chicken/slow chicken where you speed up and slow down flapping your arms. I think you mostly just like laughing at mama while she does it.
You've extended your favorite little "this is my mama, this is my dada" game to including "and I'm the baby" It reminds me of that Dinosaurs TV show from when I was little where the baby would always say "not the mama" - does anyone remember that? Seems like they would have that on DVD now...wonder if it would be fun or annoying to watch? We tried another throw back to J's childhood this month, when we thought that you might like to see the little plastic pill dissolve revealing a little foamy dinosaur. Not quite patient enough yet was the verdict on that, because you lost interest before it dissolved and didn't quite get that the foamy thing came from that little pill.
We left your snack trap at a restaurant in Chicago, so when we got to Ohio your smarty pants Auntie Lizzy made you one out of a snack pack teddy grahams container. It actually works and you are able to pack in more cereal and you are less likely to dump them all out over your head (which is something you only do when you know we are distracted like when we gave you a bag of crackers in the airport security line and just as we were going to take you out of your stroller you dumped them over your head).
You started sleeping in your big boy queen bed (our old bed) this month. Since you can climb on and off the bed safely and you've always been a crib hater, we decided to take the leap. You even tuck your little books into the little pockets on the side bed rail. Continuing your big boy streak, you also insist on us giving you big pieces of food (soft things only with close supervision), so you had your first burger (with loose turkey meat). I have a feeling that will be one of many this summer. We plan to spend more time this upcoming month running in circles around the patio furniture. Yay, for one and a half year old wearing little man shorts running in the sun...big Yay for summer!

Love, Ma
